Women's club members celebrate with cookie feast

Members of Newberry Women's Club gathered Tuesday  for the monthly business meeting, and a cookie feast prepared by hostesses Jill Hutchinson and Cheryl Withrow.

Ladies enjoyed sugar, mint, gingerbread, cherry-Rice Krispie, M&M and Almond Joy cookies along with Surprise Candy, bourbon balls and Grandma's Snickers. There was also a relish tray with assorted pickles, cheeses and crackers. Beverage offerings included fresh-brewed coffee and assorted black and herbal teas.

The meeting and social hour took place in the most beautiful venue in the village of Newberry, the gaily decorated Villemure Dining Room in the Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac Community Action Agency building in downtown Newberry.

Members of the local club extend a special thank you to Marie Nicholson, Ruth Wippert and other staff members for their assistance in making this special event a success.

Volunteers assist with distribution

Quarterly food distribution found a new home for December. The Community Action Agency building on Newberry Avenue served as the pick-up location for the fourth-quarter. Volunteers made quick work of the 378 (756 brown-paper grocery bags) portions assembled in the agency's dining room. Bag filling commenced shortly after 8 a.m., and all bags were lined up outside by noon. Marie Nicholson, service coordinator for the Newberry location of Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac CAA, explained that six members of the Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association stepped up to the plate, offering their assistance to a volunteer crew depleted by frigid temperatures. Income eligibility levels have increased for the current year. Find out if you and your family qualify for the surplus food by calling the local office at 293-5621  Find pictures of the volunteer operation below.

Louie Nicholson says, "X marks the spot."

If you did not make it to the December Community Action Agency Bingo and luncheon, you missed a great time and some beautiful decorations courtesy of Marie Nicholson and her staff. The agency's dining room was festive with Christmas trees and decorations celebrating the season. Decorating the numerous trees took two weeks and two weekends of exhausting, but satisfying work. Those who made it out for the event played Bingo for food prizes, received a reminder about the fast-approaching Medicare Part D enrollment/change-of-plan deadline, as well as a reminder of the upcoming quarterly food distribution and what documentation is needed to sign up for the commodities distributed by the local Community Action Agency and a contingent of volunteers. Now, take time to enjoy the photographs from the event (below) and think about joining this jovial group for the next Bingo/luncheon.
