Volunteers assist with distribution
Quarterly food distribution found a new home for December. The Community Action Agency building on Newberry Avenue served as the pick-up location for the fourth-quarter. Volunteers made quick work of the 378 (756 brown-paper grocery bags) portions assembled in the agency's dining room. Bag filling commenced shortly after 8 a.m., and all bags were lined up outside by noon. Marie Nicholson, service coordinator for the Newberry location of Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac CAA, explained that six members of the Tahquamenon Area Snowmobile Association stepped up to the plate, offering their assistance to a volunteer crew depleted by frigid temperatures. Income eligibility levels have increased for the current year. Find out if you and your family qualify for the surplus food by calling the local office at 293-5621 Find pictures of the volunteer operation below.

It's not BINGO, silly . . . It's 'CARDINAL!'
A good time was had by all at today's Spring Luncheon/Bingo event at the Newberry's Community Action center.
Seniors and guests from throughout the area converged on the center to enjoy Bingo, with seasonal exclamations - spring flowers or birds or games instead of the traditional Bingo shout. Participants, who were celebrating Spring, won food prizes of oats, baking mix, canned fruit, vegetable juice and more. There was also a 50-50 drawing and a delicious lunch of ham and scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables and a fresh fruit parfait for dessert.
Besides lively games of Bingo and the scrumptious lunch, those attending received information about programs available to those in the area in need of assistance with everything from nutrition to medications to filling out forms for Medicare.
The next luncheon with Bingo is set for May 3, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Because of limited seating in the Villemure Dining Room, reservations are required. Call 293-5621 to claim your seat at one of the Mother's Day tables.
